Line 4: Role of Confidant - or not
The Fixed Sphere — Friendship, Trust, and the Intimate Network
About Line 4 in Relationship
The 4th line is the Opportunist — but the word "opportunist" in Human Design carries none of its conventional negative connotation. The 4th line's opportunity comes through network: through the relationships it has already cultivated, the people it already knows, the sphere of familiarity that provides the 4th line its foundation. New connections for the 4th line almost always enter through existing ones.
In the mating dance, this creates the dynamic Ra Uru Hu identified as the Confidant role. The 4th line's intimate relationships are built on a foundation of trust, familiarity, and shared history. The sexual strategy of the 4th line is oriented toward depth within the known — not casual or exploratory encounters, but the intimacy that develops when a friend becomes something more, or when a partner becomes the person with whom the 4th line can be fully open.
The "or not" qualifier in the title is important. The Confidant role only works when trust is intact. When the 4th line's trust is broken — whether through betrayal, violation of privacy, or fundamental incompatibility revealed over time — the relational bond can dissolve with a finality that surprises those who don't understand the 4th line's relational architecture. Ra Uru Hu's transmission examines both the formation and the dissolution of the Confidant bond.
What This Program Covers

Ra Uru Hu — Founder, Human Design System
Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, April 9, 1948 — March 12, 2011) was a Canadian-born author and teacher who founded the Human Design System. In January 1987, while living on the island of Ibiza, Spain, Ra Uru Hu described an eight-day mystical encounter he called "the Voice," during which the foundational framework of Human Design was transmitted to him. He spent the following decades systematizing and teaching this body of knowledge, synthesizing elements of the I Ching, Western astrology, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, and quantum physics into a unified framework for understanding the mechanics of human consciousness and design.
Ra Uru Hu founded the International Human Design School (IHDS) in 1992 as the institutional body for maintaining the professional standards and authentic transmission of the system. Over two decades, he recorded thousands of hours of teaching programs covering every dimension of the system — from foundational mechanics to advanced specializations. The relationship and sexuality programs in this series are part of that original recorded body of work.
