A Channel is formed when two Gates at opposite ends of the same connecting path are both activated in a design. When a Channel is active, both Centers it connects are defined. A Channel with only one Gate activated is a "hanging Gate" or "dangling Gate" — the potential for definition that is not yet complete. Your design's definition (how many Centers are connected and defined) is determined entirely by which Channels are active.
