A Gate is one of the 64 energy points distributed across the 9 Centers in the Human Design BodyGraph, each corresponding to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I-Ching. Gates are the foundational building blocks of the BodyGraph — they are the specific points activated by planetary bodies at the time of the Design and Personality calculations.
Key properties of Gates:
- 64 total — one for each hexagram of the I-Ching
- 6 Lines — each Gate has six sub-expressions (Lines 1–6), corresponding to the hexagram's line structure
- Circuit affiliation — each Gate belongs to a Circuit (Individual, Collective, Tribal, or Integration) and carries that circuit's theme and frequency
- Center assignment — each Gate is located within one of the 9 Centers and contributes to that Center's themes when activated
- Channel pairing — each Gate has a complementary Gate at the other end of its Channel; when both Gates are activated, the Channel (and the Centers it bridges) becomes defined
- Keynote and theme — each Gate has a specific theme, keynote, and expression drawn from its hexagram meaning
When a Gate is activated by a planet (in either the Personality or Design calculation), it is "defined" in the natal chart — its energy is consistently accessible to the individual. When a Gate is activated but its complementary Gate is not, it is called a "hanging gate" or "harmonic gate" — seeking but not yet completing its Channel.
Gates are the most granular level of Human Design analysis in the standard BodyGraph system.
