Compromise

A hanging gate — a Gate activated in one Center without its partner Gate defined, leaving the Channel open. The energy seeks but cannot complete the circuit independently.

In Human Design analysis, Compromise (or a "compromised channel") refers to a situation where a Gate is activated in a Channel, but the complementary Gate at the other end of the Channel is not activated. This creates what is also called a "hanging gate" or "open channel."

A compromised Channel means:
- The activated Gate carries the energy of its specific theme, Line, and quality
- The Channel itself is not defined — it does not create a consistent energy bridge between the two Centers
- The individual's undefined end of the Channel remains open and available for temporary activation through transiting planets, or through the activated Gate of another person

In Composite readings, compromise is significant: when two people's hanging gates complete each other's channels, the electromagnetic attraction is strong — but the relationship may also create dependency if one person relies on the other to complete a Circuit they don't have alone.

Understanding which Channels are compromised in one's design is important for recognizing:
- Where you are naturally drawn to specific people (those who complete your channels)
- Where you may be conditioned by others or transiting planets to feel energies that are not consistently yours
- Where your gifts are "seeking" — wanting to be expressed but requiring the right context, relationship, or timing to complete
