Childhood Conditioning & the 9 Undefined Centers
Every undefined center in a child's chart is an open door — a place where the energy, beliefs, and conditioning of their environment enters and shapes who they think they are. Understanding this is not a reason for guilt. It is a reason for awareness.
In Human Design, an undefined center is not a weakness — it is a receiver. When a center is undefined, it takes in, amplifies, and reflects the energy of defined centers in the people around it. For children, who have not yet developed the self-awareness to distinguish their own experience from what they absorb from others, this creates the foundational layer of the Not-Self.
The conditioning that happens in childhood through undefined centers doesn't feel like conditioning — it feels like identity. "This is just who I am." But much of what we carry as "who I am" is actually the imprinted energy of parents, teachers, and peers with that center defined. Human Design gives us the map — and with the map, we can help children grow up with greater contact with their authentic nature.
Each page in this section covers one of the 9 centers, specifically focused on what happens when that center is undefined in a child: the conditioning patterns, the signs of authentic vs. conditioned expression, and practical guidance for parents.

The mechanics of conditioning — how the Not-Self forms through undefined centers — are detailed in Ra Uru Hu's original Jovian Archive teachings. Dr. LaVeena recommends these as the authoritative source.
